Francesco Acerbi reveals he thought about ‘everything’ he had lived through after scoring a crucial goal against Barcelona last season, and insists his Inter side ‘gave everything’ in a 5-0 loss against PSG.

Calciomercato.com has published some extracts from Acerbi’s biography, which has been released in Italy.

In this part, the Italian defender focuses on last season’s Champions journey, which saw Inter reach the second final in three years.

The Nerazzurri eliminated Barcelona in the semis also thanks to a late goal from Acerbi, which helped the Nerazzurri send the game to extra time.

“In that instant, I thought about everything I had lived through. Lazio, Sassuolo, the illness, my first goal in the Champions,” the defender wrote.

“The victories and defeats. My whole career condensed into a single second.”

The Nerazzurri went on to lose the final against PSG this past May, suffering a 5-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

“Football, unfortunately, gives you nothing for free,” Acerbi added.

“We made it to the final, but the ending wasn’t the one we had dreamed of. We played against PSG in Munich, but it wasn’t enough. What remains is the pride of a thrilling journey and the disappointment of the outcome.

“In football, as in life, you don’t always win. Every time there’s a winner, there’s also someone who loses. It’s part of the game.

“What I know is that I have nothing to reproach myself for. We gave everything. To reach two Champions Finals in three years with this shirt, through thousands of difficulties, is a source of pride that no one can take away from me. Not even a defeat in the Final.”

Acerbi, 37, has less than a year left in his contract with Inter, given that the current agreement with the Nerazzurri runs out in June 2026.

The Italy international joined the Nerazzurri from Lazio in the summer of 2022.
